Step 1: Prepare Your Domain for Transfer
Before initiating the transfer to Webflow, follow these steps to prepare your domain:
- Unlock Your Domain: Access your current domain registrar's account. In the domain management settings, locate the option for Domain Lock or Registrar Lock and disable it. This action permits the domain transfer.
- Obtain the Authorization Code: Secure the authorization code, also known as the EPP code, from your registrar. This code might be emailed to you or available in your domain dashboard. It's essential for confirming your authority to transfer the domain.
- Check Domain Eligibility: Ensure your domain is eligible for transfer. Domains are generally not transferable if they have been registered or transferred in the past 60 days.
- Update Contact Information: Verify that your contact details are current in your registrar account as transfer notifications will be sent to your email.
Step 2: Initiate the Transfer to Webflow
Once your domain is prepared, begin the transfer process:
- Log in to Your Webflow Dashboard: Visit Webflow's website and sign in to your account. Create an account if you're new to Webflow.
- Select Hosting: Access the project to which you want to add the domain. Navigate to the Hosting tab in the project settings.
- Add Custom Domain: Opt to add a custom domain, input your domain name, and follow the provided prompts.
- Enter the Authorization Code: Input the authorization code you obtained earlier when prompted by Webflow.
- Check the Transfer Status: After code submission, the transfer process will commence. Monitor the status via your Webflow dashboard.
Step 3: Verify Domain Transfer
Once you've initiated the transfer, you need to verify it:
- Email Notification: Expect an email from your current registrar about the transfer request. Follow any instructions provided, which may include confirming the transfer.
- Confirmation from Webflow: After responding to your registrar, Webflow will confirm the transfer's success. This usually takes a few days, but you can track progress through your Webflow dashboard.
Step 4: Set Up DNS Records (If Necessary)
Post-transfer, set up or update DNS records to direct your domain to Webflow hosting:
- Login to Webflow's Hosting Settings: With the transfer complete, revisit the hosting settings in your Webflow project.
- Configure DNS Settings: If instructed by the domain registrar, Webflow will provide A and CNAME records to enter.
- Update Your Registrar's DNS Settings: Head over to your domain registrar account and locate the DNS management area. Input the information from Webflow.
- Propagation Time: DNS changes may take up to 48 hours to fully propagate, during which your site might be inaccessible via the new domain.
Step 5: Finalize Your Setup
Once DNS records propagate, verify and secure your site:
- Visit Your Domain: In a web browser, check if your domain directs to your Webflow website.
- Check Site Functionality: Test various pages and features to ensure everything operates smoothly.
- Set Up SSL: If needed, enable SSL in your Webflow hosting settings for site security. Webflow provides SSL certification, which enhances site security and SEO.
