How to Set Up Categories for Webflow Blogs

October 13, 2024

Access your project in Webflow by logging into your account and opening the project containing your blog. This will take you to the Webflow Designer view.

Create a new collection specifically for categories by following these steps:
- Click the CMS icon in the left-hand sidebar, which looks like a database.
- Click "New Collection" to create a new collection.
- Name this collection something like "Categories" to clearly indicate its purpose.
- Add relevant fields such as Name (the category's title), Slug (an URL-friendly version), and optionally Description (a brief summary helpful for SEO).
- Save the collection after entering the necessary information.

Populate your Categories collection by adding individual category items:
- Click on your newly created Categories collection.
- Click "New Category" to add a new category.
- Fill in fields like Name, Slug, and Description.
- Repeat for all categories you want to include in your blog.

Link blog posts to these categories:
- Access your Blog Posts collection—create one if it doesn’t exist.
- Edit an existing blog post or create a new one.
- Look for a field labeled Category or Categories in the blog post settings.
- Select the relevant category or categories for the post.
- Save your changes.

Display categories on your blog by updating the blog layout:
- Navigate in the Webflow Designer to the blog post template or page where categories should be displayed.
- Drag a Collection List element onto the page and link it to the Categories collection.
- Add text elements to the Collection List bound to the category name and slug.
- Style these elements to fit your blog's design.

Optionally, enhance user navigation with a categories navigation bar:
- Add a new section in the Designer at the top or side of your blog.
- Drag a Collection List element into this section and link it to the Categories collection.
- Style the items to look like buttons or links for clean navigation.
- Ensure each link directs users to the respective category pages so they can view all related posts.

Publish and test your blog:
- Click the Publish button in the top right corner to publish your changes.
- Navigate to your blog to ensure all categories are displayed correctly and links function properly.

By following these steps, you can effectively organize categories for your Webflow blog, which enhances the layout and makes content easier for readers to find.
